Paternal Lineage (Y-STR) Test
Paternal lineage (Y-STR) testing is a method for proving family relationships
through the paternal line (the father’s side of the family). It is based
on the fact that the Y chromosome is inherited from father to son relatively
unchanged through many generations. The diagram on the right shows how the Y
chromosome is inherited. Those who are in the same paternal line share very
similar Y chromosome patterns.
Test results may be
used as additional evidence in complicated paternity and inheritance cases, for
example, to supplement siblingship test results. Genealogy enthusiasts also use this test to confirm a possible paternal relative.
Paternal lineage tests are performed either using an in-home kit (for personal knowledge only) or using a Chain of Custody, a documentation process that
makes the test results legally admissible (accepted by courts and other
government agencies).
If you would discuss either option, please call one of our case managers at

Tested Parties Two or more males are
tested in a paternal lineage test. Although females cannot participate in this
test, a close male relative of the female (usually a full brother) may
contribute a sample to indirectly determine the female’s relationship with
a paternal lineage. Painless Sample Collection
Our
standard procedure uses the painless and non-invasive buccal swaba
cotton-like swab rubbed against the inside of your mouth to gather loose cheek
cells.
