Viability Test
In some paternity cases, a person who needs to be tested (usually the alleged father) is missing or deceased. It may be possible to use a biological sample such as hair, bone, or tissue. Often samples for a DNA test are avaialble from a coroner, medical examiner, hospital or funeral home. A viability test is first performed on the sample to determine whether there is enough DNA that can be used for the paternity test.
What Samples Can Be Used?
Our laboratory can conduct a viability test on a range of biological samples, such as frozen blood or other tissue samples. Before scheduling a viability test, the lab needs the following information to determine the chances of obtaining enough useful DNA from the sample:
- Size or amount of available sample
- Age of the sample
- Conditions in which the sample was stored
