Legal Paternity Testing
A legal paternity test is a conclusive,
accredited, and documented test that uses DNA analysis to determine if a man is
the biological father of a child. The key difference between a legal paternity
test and an in-home paternity test is the
Chain of Custody,
a documentation process used in the legal test to make the test results legally defensible (accepted by many courts and other government agencies). Legal paternity test results are notarized.
Lab Collected Samples
Because of the strict Chain of Custody, parties involved in a legal paternity test must have their samples collected by a lab professional. Legal DNA tested parties cannot collect their own DNA samples. Read about our painless collection procedure below.
Legal paternity tests are considered "accredited" because they are performed through a strict procedure that is approved by an accrediting body. These accrediting bodies, such as ISO, are official organizations that are responsible for inspecting DNA testing laboratories. These legal paternity test results are also notarized to assure legal parties that the persons tested were identified.
Legal DNA Test Uses
The results of a legal paternity test may be used to prove or disprove paternity for legal purposes such as child support, custody, and inheritance.
Because the legal paternity test follows strict chain of custody, we can confirm the identities of the tested parties and include their names on the report of the DNA test results.
GeneSys provides you with the most reliable DNA testing in the industry. Please read the article, "Choosing a Paternity Testing Company," to find out what you should look for in a paternity testing company.
Our laboratory routinely achieves accurate results of probabilities of paternity of 99.9999% and higher. Our unmatched level of accuracy allows us to guarantee conclusive paternity test results--99.99% or higher probabilities of paternity for inclusions (the alleged father is the biological father) and 100% certainty for exclusions (the alleged father is not the biological father). For motherless tests, we guarantee a 99.9% or higher for inclusions and 100% for exclusions.
If the test we perform is not conclusive or does not achieve the accuracy rate we promise, we provide a money-back guarantee to our customers.
In a standard legal paternity test, a child, the alleged father, and the mother (called a trio) are tested. We also may perform a motherless test. A motherless test requires additional analytical procedures, but we charge the same fee for a trio and a motherless case, and the results are equally conclusive.
If you need a legal test, please note that some courts might require that the mother participate in the test. We urge you to have the mother participate whenever possible.
Painless Collection Procedure
Our standard procedure uses the painless and non-invasive buccal swaba cotton-like swab rubbed against the inside of the patient’s mouth to gather loose cheek cells.
Convenient Appointment Locations
We have the largest sample collection network in the United States. If you live in the U.S., we can schedule your appointment at a location close to your home or work, often on the same day. There are thousands of collection sites affiliated with us all over the U.S. and worldwide.
The collection facility charges a sample collection fee of $70 for an alleged father and child; mothers are collected free of charge. Additional tested parties (children or alleged fathers) are collected at $35 each. For your convenience, we pre-pay the collection fee and add it to your balance.
(New York residents, please see special notice at the bottom of this page.)
Fast, Notarized Results
We can complete the test within five working days after receiving samples from all tested parties. We also offer expedited testing services if you need the results sooner. Legal test results are signed by one of our M.D. or Ph.D. scientists and notarized.
Special notice for New York residents
Because we abide by the New York State Department of Health's regulations, we cannot collect samples for a paternity test without a request from a physician or attorney. Please call 1-888-362-2592 for assistance in setting up your legal paternity test.
