Maternity Test A maternity test is used to determine if a woman is a child’s biological mother. Results of a maternity test may be used to prove the maternal relationship in immigration or adoption cases. Our laboratory also has performed the test for patients in these situations: - Mothers or hospital staff who suspect that a mix-up has occurred between babies in the nursery
- Adoptees and birth mothers who want to ensure they have been reunited with the right person
- A mother who has conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF) and wants to ensure that the implanted embryo is really hers
Maternity tests can be done using an in-home kit if the results are for personal knowledge only. In-home testing can be ordered online.
If needed for a legal purpose such as immigration, maternity testing can be performed using a Chain of Custody, a documentation process that makes the test results legally admissible (accepted by courts and other government agencies).

Tested Parties
In a maternity test, a child and alleged mother are tested. Participation of the father in the test is not required to produce conclusive results.
Painless Collection Procedure
Our standard procedure uses the painless and non-invasive buccal swab—a cotton-like swab rubbed against the inside of the patient’s mouth to gather loose cheek cells.
Fast Results
We can complete the test within three working days after receiving samples from all tested parties. We also offer expedited testing services if you need the results sooner. In-home maternity test results are emailed as soon as they are released by the laboratory.
Legal test results are signed by one of Ph.D. scientists, notarized, and sent via first class mail, courier, or fax.
