Procedures

If you think you may have samples that can be used in a viability study, please call us at 1-888-362-2592. You will need to provide us the following information:

  • The name and contact information of the coroner, medical examiner, hospital, or funeral home that has the sample.
  • The age and storage condition of the sample.

If we determine that we can proceed with the viability study, we make arrangements for transfer of the sample to our laboratory. If we cannot use the samples, our case managers will review the information you provided and recommend alternative DNA tests that you could take.

Transfer of Samples to Our Laboratory
The samples are transferred directly to our laboratory using a Chain of Custody documentation process that enables results of any test conducted on the sample to be legally admissible. The next of kin of the deceased needs to sign a Consent Form allowing the coroner, medical examiner, hospital or funeral home to send the samples to us for paternity or other DNA testing.

Results of the Viability Study
In our laboratory, we test the sample to see if enough useful DNA is present for a paternity or other DNA testing. Results are available within 9 working days of receiving the sample.

If the viability test result is positive, we can proceed with the legal paternity test. We will contact you to schedule appointments for the other tested parties (mother, child, or others). If the viability test result is negative, we will discuss other DNA testing options with you.
